1. Slow down. If your child is enjoying a particular activity or exploration, let them take as much time as they need to satisfy their curiosity.⠀
2. Set small achievable goals so that your child can experience feelings of success.⠀
3. Read a book or facilitate an activity that you truly enjoy too. Your child will love the time learning alongside you even more because joy is contagious.⠀
4. Offer your child choices often, and let your child lead.⠀

Is it heating up where you live? If so, this tool box ice excavation might cool your kids down for a bit. ❄️⠀

For your child to be able to excavate ice, you will freeze some toys and tools in water. Gather together safety goggles, a plastic bowl or container, water, some smaller toolbox items, a hammer, screwdriver, and small construction toys. If you cannot take this melty activity outside, you will also want a utility bin to use in the bathtub for the melting ice. For small toolbox items, use items you feel safe letting your preschooler use, such as nuts, bolts, screws, washers, wall anchors, etc. Small construction toys can be small trucks or other such items. Gather the smaller toolbox items and/or toy construction vehicles, and ask your child if they can identify them. Also discuss what each tool and vehicle does within the context of constructing a house. Next, ask your child to help you put them on the plastic bowl or container and cover the items with water. If you want to get tricky, only put half the items in and fill halfway with water. When that is frozen enough, add the other items and fill with water. Leave the items in the freezer for 24 to 48 hours to freeze completely. When you are ready to take the block out, equip your child with their safety goggles, a hammer, and a screwdriver, bring the ice block outside to an open grass area, and let them pick away at the ice with their tools to see if they can free any of the frozen items. They may wish to wait until the ice melts a bit to help speed up the excavation. 🧊⠀
