Pompom Garland Making Activity Directions:

The materials you need for this activity are yarn, cardboard, embroidery needles, scissors, and a basket or bowl. When you make enough pompoms, you can turn them into a fun garland by connecting them with a string of yarn. Begin by cutting a few different sizes of squares and rectangles from the cardboard and place them in a basket, bowl, or jar. The sizes of cardboard you cut need to be manageable for little hands to wrap string around are 2x2-inch, 2x4-inch, 4x4-inch, or 4x6-inch pieces.

Once the cardboard pieces are cut, gather the materials and your children, and sit in a circle on the rug. Sitting in a circle will allow you greater flexibility in assisting those that need help. Pass around the container of cardboard and have each child take out one piece. Let them know they are free to exchange for another size when they are done. When everyone has a piece of cardboard, show them how to take yarn and wrap it around the middle of the cardboard. The more yarn they wrap, the thicker the pom pom will be. Consider cutting a small slit in the top of the cardboard and stick one end of the yarn down in it, making sure to leave a long tail. This will keep their wrapping in place. Offer help as needed. When they are ready to tie it off, stop everyone and show them how to cut the end of the yarn and then cut another piece about four inches in length. This will be what they will use to tie off the pompom. Show them how to take the loops off the cardboard, thread the length of yarn around the middle of the pompom to secure it. Once it has been tied, hand the children a pair of scissors and invite them to trim their pompoms. The shorter the length of the yarn, the fluffier the pompom will be. As the children are working, put on some music or an audiobook for them to listen to. With each pompom they finish, let them exchange the cardboard for a different one if they want a change. When they have at least ten pompoms, show them how to string them together by threading a long length of yarn with the embroidery needle by pushing it through the center of the pompoms. Hang it up across a window, fireplace, or wall when done.
