Practicing scissor skills ✂️ is a great activity because it builds muscles that come in handy when learning to write, painting, eating with utensils, and putting on clothes. Scissor skill activities also improve hand-eye coordination and bilateral coordination (using both hands to complete different parts of tasks), and can help children improve focus and attention. What are your favorite scissor skill activities? We have one favorite for you to try: Snowflake Cutouts.⠀

All you need to make snowflake cutouts are scissors, a pencil, and printer paper. Prepare the piece of white paper for your child by cutting it down into a square and then fold the paper in half lengthwise, then in half again widthwise to form a small square. Next, help your child fold the square over from one corner to the other to form a triangle, being sure not to fold the corner that is completely closed. ⠀

Cut the open side of your triangle so that the edge is rounded and will form a circle once the snowflake is opened. Show your child how they can cut out a few little shapes out of the sides of their folded triangle. You may want to draw a few simple designs for them in pencil to use as a guide for cutting. Help your child as needed, then let them carefully open their snowflake. Repeat as many times as your child wishes to practice! ⠀

"My daughter loooves to bake 🧁 Last year she asked for a baking set for Christmas and all year it’s been put to use making all sorts of treats.⠀

Baking and cooking can be such a great educational experience for children. It is a chance for children to play and explore sensory skills by learning about a variety of ingredients. It is also a great way to introduce math & science within the precision required to follow recipes. It also is a great way to incorporate learning about different cultures and cuisine. For homeschool, I try to find a way to incorporate baking or cooking for every weekly unit if possible. This month we read the story Madeline, and baked some Madeleines cookies! They were surprisingly easy to make, delicious, and oh so cute🇫🇷"⠀

We have a tip to spice things up -- Create an invitation to math! Set up a basket or tray with manipulatives and math game supplies. If your child is older, set up hands-on geometry exercises, science experiments, or some cards with prompts to solve complex real-life equations. Here are a few (found on Robert Lapinsky’s math website): How much money do you earn from 1,000,000 streams on Spotify? How much would a 100x100 cheeseburger cost at In-N-Out? Which Michael’s coupon should you use to get the best discount? Which pizza is a better deal? ⠀
