What are your Thanksgiving plans this week? We're making plans to cuddle up and get cozy with some great books this week, maybe create some fun crafts and get started with holiday decorating. Turkey handprints and pom pom garlands are definitely on the to-do list. It's going to be a quiet holiday this year, but we have so much to be thankful for - good meals, a roof over our heads and the grace of simplicity. ⠀

Nature - our saving grace, the daily dose of calm (and Vitamin D) we all need. ☀️ ⠀

Getting outside as a family is not only a great way to spend time together, but one of the few spaces to be with friends and still maintain safe distance. Think nature exploration. Foraging. Nature-based art projects à la Andy Goldsworthy. Study seasons, biomes, plant and animal life cycles. Sort, count or divide acorns, and paint with mud and flowers. Take story time outside, and if it's getting cold, bundle up and make the best of it. Don't underestimate the healing power of play, especially outdoors. The fresh air and movement may be everything your family needs today. 🌿⠀

Why is story mapping a valuable learning tool for

Why is story mapping a valuable learning tool for your young children? Mapping provides them with an opportunity to lay out a visual aid that depicts the settings or sequence of events in a story, increasing their ability to replay and organize their thoughts and recall the sequencing of events. It also solidifies their understanding of the story, which means they'll engage with the story that much more.⠀

Here's an example of one of our mapping activities for your child. First, read or listen to the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.⠀

You will need 1-inch grid paper (download and print our grid paper https://buff.ly/2Ut28Tw), 1-inch blocks, peg dolls, and markers. Now you will make a map of where the Three Billy Goats Gruff went. Start by showing them how the cubes fit in the squares on the grid. Then, show them how to lay a few cubes to make the rocky land. Since there is a bridge connecting the two places, the rocky land should be toward the bottom left of the paper. Tell your child they will color every square that is covered by a block, but to do that they will first need to outline the blocks. Show them how to trace around the blocks so that when they are removed your child knows where to color. When all the squares are colored in, direct them to place blocks toward the bottom right to map the land the billy goats went to. Once all the blocks have been placed, give your child a green marker, trace the blocks, then color in each square. Have them connect the rocks and grass with a bridge by placing one cube at a time from one side to the other. Once the bridge has been made, give your child a brown marker, have them trace the bridge and color in each square. ⠀

Take out four wooden peg dolls - three will become the billy goats and one will be the troll. Explain to your child that you will direct them where the peg dolls will go on the map. Use directional words like over, across, left, right, up, and down. Start with the peg dolls at the bottom of the map. As you give directions, have them move the peg dolls accordingly over the map. Once they make it past the troll and across to the green grass, let your child have a turn giving you directions.

Easy Colored Rice Recipe ⠀

🟣 1 cup of white rice⠀
🔵 1 tsp white vinegar⠀
🟢 1⁄8 tsp food coloring⠀
⠀
Put the rice into a zip-seal plastic bag. Add the white vinegar and food coloring. Seal the bag and shake it well to mix and coat all of the rice. Cover a cookie sheet with aluminum foil, then pour the rice onto the foil and ensure that it is spread out; allow it to dry for at least an hour. Repeat the process with different colors or double the recipe if you would like more than one cup of colored rice.

Kari and her kids dug in to the experiential learning that is an important part of Wisdom Wonder Project curriculum. Choosing a couple of activities each week to work on together, she found that the nature study activities were one of her sons' favorites. For example, after reading “Harold and the Purple Crayon”, the family went for a bike ride and talked about walking up a hill and change in elevation. For “King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub”, they went fishing and talked about what the other fisherman were doing and then spoke with a fisherman about their experience. The family also discussed fishing equipment and the environment. Kari's 7 year old son particularly enjoyed learning about biomes, and colored the provided biome map to show how the different biomes are spread throughout the world. We love Kari's family truly embraced the program, and that they are gaining so much from our literature-based activities!
