Our Young Masters art curriculum author Emma Saper

Our Young Masters art curriculum author Emma Saperstein is a multitalented creative presence in the art world. Emma has served in a variety of curatorial and arts management positions throughout her career, including curator for Cuesta College's Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery and an international art group called Shared_Studios. Emma is currently transitioning into a new position as the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art's Chief Curator and Director of K-12 Programming, and we are thrilled for her. ⠀

Make a fairy house out of craft sticks to add to a fairy garden. For this activity, the materials needed are craft sticks, craft glue, painter's tape, acrylic paint, and paintbrushes. Guide your child to lay down ten to twelve craft sticks in a row with the long sides touching the craft stick(s) next to them. Next, they will place one craft stick across the top and one across the bottom of the craft stick(s). These two craft sticks will be used to hold the ten to twelve craft sticks in place. With your child, glue the two horizontal sticks down using craft glue. After this, the first panel is complete. To make the fairy house, you and your child shall complete the panel-making process four more times. To assemble the fairy house, your child shall use the five craft stick panels to structure a fairy house. If your child wants their roof to be pitched, then they will need to make two additional panels. Gluing these pieces together takes some finagling, so encourage your child to be patient, and use painter's tape to hold the sides in place until the glue dries if needed. Once all the pieces are glued together, set them aside to dry. While it’s drying, ask your child how they would like to paint the fairy house. Have your child use the paint palette, paint, and paintbrushes to paint their house how they would like. Add the fairy house to the fairy garden to add more fairy magic. 🧚🏽‍♂️⠀

Build a boat that will float! ⛵️⠀

You will need to gather an empty egg carton, two skewer sticks, air dry clay or playdough, acrylic paint, paintbrushes, a jar of water, a paint palette or paper plate, the protective tablecloth, a tray, masking/painter’s tape, and one sheet of construction paper. ⠀

For your child to create their own boat, trim the top and front tab off of the egg carton. You can cut the egg carton in half if you want a smaller boat, but it will not float as well. Set out the acrylic paints, paintbrushes, the jar of water, and the egg carton out on the tray or wax paper. Invite your child to decorate the inside and outside of the boat with acrylic paints. Next, help your child cut the piece of construction paper into two squares and appropriate size for sails for the boat. Allow your child to paint or decorate their square sails if they would like. Once the sails have dried, help your child safely use a skewer stick to pierce one paper square through the top and bottom of the sail, about 1 1⁄2 inches from the edge, so that it creates a curved sail. Repeat with the other square sail and skewer stick. Make two small balls about the size of a cherry tomato and then stick the ball in the middle two indentations of the boat. Let them stick the skewer for each sail into the clay or playdough to enable it to stand up. Make sure that the paint is fully dry before putting the clay and playdough in. Now that the boat is ready, allow your child time to sail it in the bathtub, a pool, or a sensory tub.⠀
