Nature Color Sorting 🌿🌸⠀

This activity turns a nature walk into an opportunity to explore color even more. The materials you need are a color wheel and basket or bag to take on a nature walk. Before setting off on a walk with your child, sit them down with the color wheel in a comfortable place and go over all the colors on the wheel. Tell your child that as you head out on their walk, they will be looking for a variety of items they can sort and then turn into a picture. When they come across something colorful on the ground, have them put it in the basket to take home. Continue walking and gathering until there is a nice variety of items in your child's basket and then head home. Once you’re home, pour out the contents of the basket onto a work surface along with the color wheel and encourage your child to begin sorting the objects into color groups. How many groups did they come up with? Are there any groups that can be sorted even further? For example, are all the greens the same shade? How about any of the other colors? When you are done discussing all the different color groups, invite your child to use the items to make a picture on the table. This picture can also be made outside on the sidewalk, ground, or pavement. Leave it out for others to enjoy!⠀

*This activity could present a wonderful opportunity to talk with children about stewardship, boundaries, native plants, and respecting nature.

Is it heating up where you live? If so, this tool box ice excavation might cool your kids down for a bit. ❄️⠀

For your child to be able to excavate ice, you will freeze some toys and tools in water. Gather together safety goggles, a plastic bowl or container, water, some smaller toolbox items, a hammer, screwdriver, and small construction toys. If you cannot take this melty activity outside, you will also want a utility bin to use in the bathtub for the melting ice. For small toolbox items, use items you feel safe letting your preschooler use, such as nuts, bolts, screws, washers, wall anchors, etc. Small construction toys can be small trucks or other such items. Gather the smaller toolbox items and/or toy construction vehicles, and ask your child if they can identify them. Also discuss what each tool and vehicle does within the context of constructing a house. Next, ask your child to help you put them on the plastic bowl or container and cover the items with water. If you want to get tricky, only put half the items in and fill halfway with water. When that is frozen enough, add the other items and fill with water. Leave the items in the freezer for 24 to 48 hours to freeze completely. When you are ready to take the block out, equip your child with their safety goggles, a hammer, and a screwdriver, bring the ice block outside to an open grass area, and let them pick away at the ice with their tools to see if they can free any of the frozen items. They may wish to wait until the ice melts a bit to help speed up the excavation. 🧊⠀
